Things to do
FOOD MARKET: Ditch your soggy sarnies and have lunch at Cabot Street Bites, an occasional street food market with dishes from 15 different traders. Get your teeth into pasta, steak and chips, Greek souvlaki or spicy Thai dishes. Cabot Square (Canary Wharf), free entry, just turn up, 11am-3pm
SURROUND SOUNDS: If you've got a little longer to enjoy your nosh from the street food market (above), take it to Canada Square Park and watch Surround Sounds, a free gig showcasing the work of up and coming local artists. Canada Square Park (Canary Wharf), free, just turn up, 12.30pm-2pm/6pm-9pm
GARDEN WALK: Join a member of the gardening team at Fulham Palace for a tour of part of the 13-acre site. FRAME SALE: Brighten up your home with a bargain or two from Whitechapel Gallery's frame sale. Ex-display frames from the gallery are also available to buy separately. Whitechapel Gallery, free, just turn up, 5pm-8pm
MUSEUM LATE: England's oldest medical college, the Royal College of Physicians, stays open late to let the public explore its exhibitions and objects. See artworks by Sir Joshua Reynolds and unusual medical objects, and join a curator-led tour, all under one (Grade-I listed) roof. Royal College of Physicians (Regent's Park), free, book ahead, 5.30pm
SLEIGHT OF HAND: Tying in with the current Smoke and Mirrors exhibition about the world of magic, Wellcome Collection hosts a live performance by sleight of hand expert Michael Vincent. He also offers an insight into his journey as a deaf magician, and the event is BSL-interpreted. Wellcome Collection (Euston), free, just turn up, 6.30pm-6.50pm/7.30pm-7.50pm
PECKAKUCHA: Peckakucha is a Japanese concept, where a range of speakers each talk about a subject for no longer than six minutes 40 seconds. The theme for this version of the event is 'transformations', with eight speakers from various backgrounds sharing their thoughts within the time limit. Geffrye Museum (Hoxton), £8/£6, book ahead, 6.30pm-10pm
LONDON IS A FOREST: Aptly-named author Paul Wood appears at Waterstones to talk about London's green side, as revealed in his book, London Is A Forest. Hear him talk about the city's 8.3 million trees (he probably won't mention them all individually), then get your copy signed. Waterstones Crouch End, free, book ahead, 7pm
STEAMPUNK OPERA: Opera fuses with musical theatre, with a steampunk twist thrown in for this theatre performance, which has had an extra date added due to high demand. It's the story of the oldest son of a Mafia family, who turns his back on his criminal roots to design steampunk airships. Other Palace (Victoria), £15, book ahead, 7pm
Tube ponderings with Barry Heck
Our resident tube fancier dishes out daily thoughts on the London Underground.
Happy Yorkshire Day, a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of God's Own Country. Our friends up north do not have their own tube line but, if they did, it would probably look a little something like this. Follow Barry on @HeckTube.
Good cause of the day
