Things to do:

CHARTERHOUSE ART WORKSHOP: Spend the day wandering around the site of a 14th century Carthusian monastery, Tudor mansion, and 17th century school in pursuit of artistic inspiration. Working in pen, wash and pencil, you'll create your own sketches of this history-steeped cluster of buildings before venturing to the nearby Smithfield Market for some more creative fun. The Charterhouse (Clerkenwell), £50 book ahead, 10am-3pm

JENNY HOLZER: There's a new free display for you to ponder over in the Tate's Artist Rooms. Jenny Holzer's flickering neon signs and messages engraved into marble offer contradictory slogans that respond to the information overload that is thrown at us daily. Artist Rooms, Tate Modern (Southbank), free, just turn up, 10am-6pm, until 31 July 2019

KITCHEN GARDEN POP UP: A botanical haven arrives in the heart of SW1. Get some respite from the hustle and bustle of central London life in The Kitchen Garden's five unique zones, which include a lavender lounge, a performance stage, and a fitness and wellbeing hideaway. All proceeds go to charity. Nova Food (Victoria), £5, book ahead, 10am-8pm, until 8 September

FLOWER FAIRIES CAKE WORKSHOP: Got a kid with a sweet tooth? Take them to decorate fairy cakes with beetroot powder, edible flowers and freeze dried strawberries at The Garden Museum. While there, also visit the exhibition Flower Fairies: Botanical Magic, featuring Cicely Mary Barker's beloved illustrations. The Garden Museum (Lambeth), free with museum admission, just turn up, 2pm-4pm

STEPHEN CATLING: Raggedy northerner Stephen Catling has more than a few enemies — and one of them is himself. See him throw a few punches at this unpredictable and possibly violent comedy show. The Bill Murray (Islington), £5, book ahead, 6pm-6.30pm
