A little-known 'castle' in south-east London is hosting a late-night opening on Friday, with live music, cocktails, and 360° views of London.
Severndroog Castle — technically a folly, as we found out on our 2015 visit — sits atop Shooters Hill in Oxleas Wood near Eltham. Its forest location means many don't know it there, making it something of a secret.
At Friday's Severndroog Lates, there's a chance to explore the castle after hours — including the open viewing gallery at the top, offering a view across an impressive seven counties on a clear day. Its highly unlikely you'll see all the way to Windsor at night, but the views of the illuminated London skyline promise to be a treat.
Elsewhere, explore an exhibition of artwork by Andrea Passaponti, and enjoy live acoustic soul music. The Terrace Tearoom stays open late selling food, cocktails, beer and wine. For us though, it's all about the views.
Severndroog Lates takes place on Friday 3 May 2019, 6.30pm-10pm. Age 14+. Premium tickets (which give you access to the viewing platform during sunset) have sold out but regular tickets (access to the platform before or after sunset) are £12 and need to be booked in advance. All tickets include a glass of wine.
