The Southbank Centre launches a brand new events series this autumn, platforming new work from independent British artists.
KUNSTY — named after the German word for art — takes performers and audience members to the boundaries of dance, live art and cabaret, with several London, UK and world premiere performances to get stuck into. Late-night shows are due to take place in the KUNSTY cabaret lounge in the Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer.
Seven dancers star in Sung Im Her: 1 Degree Celsius (6 November), the South Korean choreographer's piece on climate change and the effects it's having on the environment. The performance is set to a new musical score created using data collected from rising atmospheric temperatures. The lighting design, too, is co-ordinated to the rising temperature of the earth, elevating this spectacle into a rather special dance performance.
Flamenco-inspired queer cabaret Cabrolé! (6 and 7 November) celebrates the dance form's origins in marginalised and migrant communities. It's a lively night of dance, song, queerness, joy and community, with an ethos of love, acceptance and self-expression for all. The creators describe it as "a call to rebellion, on stage, and in glitter!", which sounds like an outstanding night out to us.
Shape-shifting artist and storyteller Justin Talplacido Shoulder gives an international guest performance in ANITO (7 and 8 November), which combines collective craft, puppetry, dance and experimental electronic music to reimagine early Filipino myths and stories for the modern age. It's rooted in Sydney’s underground queer and diasporic club scenes.
Enter a dystopian reality in Bullyache: WHO HURT YOU? (5 November), with a fading performer (played by legendary drag artist and pianist Barbs) and her two backing dancers trying to keep their dreams alive. Catch the London premiere of Harry Clayton-Wright: Mr Blackpool's Seaside Spectacular (8 November), an end of the pier show set at the end of the world, bringing stories of a Blackpool entertainer to life in lurid technicolor and garish spectacle.
