From skyscrapers in the Square Mile to the subterranean structures we unknowingly walk over every day, London is home to some seriously impressive feats of civil engineering. And this month, you're invited to discover everything about them, with a little help from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
ICE's Explore Engineering Weekend of walks, tours, and trails runs 21-23 June, though the fun actually kicks off earlier in the week with a screening of the Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures, courtesy of Rochester Bridge Trust. Head to Bexleyheath on Wednesday 19 June and discover this true story of the space race's unsung heroes: three female African-American mathematicians who defied the odds to become NASA engineers.
Like all the events in the series, this one is completely free — but you do have to book your place in advance. The screening is open to children and young people with their families, teachers and youth group leaders, and there's even free snacks.
Fast-forward to the weekend, and you've got not one, but two chances to stretch your legs while learning all about the infrastructure projects that have made London what it is today. First, on Saturday 22 June, it's time to explore the transformative power of engineering in the City of London. On this stroll around the Square Mile, you'll discover the area's tallest, deepest, oldest, and newest infrastructure projects.
Then on Sunday you're invited to uncover the capital's subterranean secrets on the Hidden London walking tour. As you make your way from Embankment towards the City, ICE London volunteers will reveal what really goes on beneath our feet to keep the capital running smoothly.
There's nothing like an easy bike ride to round off your weekend, and this one is extra-special. On Sunday 23 June, ICE teams up Southwark Cyclists to showcase the legacies of London's engineering heroes. As you cycle along the River Thames up to Abbey Mills Pumping station, you'll pedal past feats like Brunel's Thames Tunnel and the Telford-designed St Katherine's Dock.
ICE's Explore Engineering Weekend is always popular, so do make sure you book ahead to avoid disappointment. Alternatively, if you fancy escaping London that week, ICE is running walks in both Hampshire and Kent that are easily reachable from the city.
