The Victorian Crystal Palace Subway will host a silent disco this December.
Following a restoration project, the ornate Grade II* listed structure is gradually being opened to the public more and more, something which was previously reserved for special occasions such as Open House. A pop-up Christmas cinema has already been announced, taking place 6-15 December. Now we hear (quietly) about a silent disco.
Disco-goers each get a pair of headphones (which light up with LEDs for extra party oomph), through which you can switch between three channels, each playing a live DJ spinning pop and dance tunes... and, with it being December and all, a couple of festive songs for good measure.
Before you go putting your gladrags on, be aware that high heels are not allowed, to protect the venue's historic floors. Unfortunately, the only access to the subway is via 30 steps, making the event inaccessible for wheelchair users. Drinks, bar snacks, popcorn and sweets are available to buy from a pop-up bar.
The subway was built in the 1860s as a walkway between the actual Crystal Palace, and the former Crystal Palace High Level railway station. We took a look behind the scenes a few years ago, before the restoration work began:
The first silent disco at the Crystal Palace Subway takes place on Friday 13 December, 7pm-10pm. Tickets are £20 and must be booked in advance, as there's a maximum capacity of 350 people.
