The freshly restored Crystal Palace Subway is becoming a pop-up cinema this Christmas.
Following a £3.5 million restoration, the crypt of Italianate cream and terracotta brickwork, held aloft by a forest of octagonal trunks, is taken over by Pop Up Screens from 6-15 December 2024. It'll screen classic festive films including Elf, Home Alone, A Muppet Christmas Carol and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
The already-enchanting setting will be made more magical with a sprinkling of fairy lights and Christmas trees. There'll be a bar selling booze, popcorn and sweets — and visitors can bring in their own snacks (although not their own alcohol).
The Crystal Palace Subway was built in 1865 to convey visitors from the high-level railway station to the famous Crystal Palace — although both the station and the Palace are now long-gone. We're excited about the subway's new chapter as a one-of-a-kind venue.
Pop Up Screens at Crystal Palace Subway, 6-15 December 2024. As it's a listed Victorian building, there's unfortunately no wheelchair access.
