You might think this is the wrong end of Borough High Street for ships... but I suppose much of Southwark was once waterlogged... and a Roman boat was discovered round the corner at Guy's Hospital... so perhaps we shouldn't quibble.

Anyhow, this is a humdinger of a pub, in a part of town unusually blessed with pubbish dings-that-hum. The wood-panelled interior manages to look simultaneously olde-worlde and modern — a clever trick effected by a recent refit by new owners True Pub Co, who took it on after Fuller's pulled out in 2023. That said, the pub is 200 years old in one form or another.

The pub goes big on food, with a mezze menu that would put dedicated restaurants to shame. The beer choice is mostly mainstream (Pride, Landlord et al.), and a prominent Guinness tap.

There's a beer garden to the side, pretty large by Zone 1 standards, and very busy on our Wednesday evening stop-off. All in all, good to see this fine old ship back to its best.
