It's hard to think of a more welcoming pub. To wander in from a crisp winter's walk on the heath is to find a roaring fire, winter ales and a warren of cosy snugs and side rooms. Bliss.

The Green Man, Putney Heath

The Green Man has been around since at least 1700, and purports to have been the haunt of highwaymen and heath-bound duellers, looking for some Dutch courage. Among their number may have been Prime Minister William Pitt, who fought a well-documented pistol duel with George Tierney MP in 1798. Or perhaps George Canning, another Prime Minister, who was wounded by Lord Castlereagh in another high-powered fight near the pub.

The modern day pub celebrates this heritage, with pictures and portraits of local highwaymen, including Jerry Abershawe whose corpse was gibbetted outside the pub at the end of the 18th century. A roaring wood fire or two add a touch of ye olde in winter. Outside, a large covered garden is a welcome find all year round.

The pub is owned by Young's, with the usual range of ales and decent dining options.
