An old pub newly restored to look old in a new way? The H&M, as nobody's calling it, looks a little bit too fresh around the edges, even though the fittings and partitions are proper ancient, right down to the Georgian panelling. It needs time to bed down a bit, gain some nicotine stains on the ceiling, or whatever. Even so, it's a charismatic place to sit and sup.

And the supping options are very good indeed. The pub is independently owned (by the same person who owns Wimbledon's much-loved Trafalgar), and puts on an ever-changing range of tipples from small breweries. A pint of Apollo from Crouch Vale Brewery in Essex served us well on our visit.

The uniquely named Hand and Marigold — named after the flower, not the rubber glove — has been around in one form or another since 1793, but was forced to close in the wake of Covid. Its new owners brought the place back to life in 2025, and it's quickly gained a reputation among beer cognoscenti and the CAMRA set.

It's an excellent addition to this corner of Bermondsey, which also boasts Simon the Tanner and the Woolpack for a very good pub crawl indeed.
