On its London debut in 2024, Cable Street — a musical set around 1936's Battle of Cable Street, in which a diverse community of East Enders faced-off Oswald Mosley's fascists — won critical, and popular, acclaim.
Its first Southwark Playhouse staging selling out, Cable Street returned later in the year, the Guardian praising its "Hamilton-like hip-hop-ish commentary... witty Sondheim-homage... [and] Mel Brooks' ridiculing of the far right." The swell of far right sentiment oozing through the western world at that moment galvanised the show — making it all the more vital.
Fast-forward a year and — given recent sickening scenes in central London — the announcement of Cable Street's next reprise is a welcome one. This time the Adam Lenson-directed show will be on at the Marylebone Theatre from Friday 16 January-Saturday 28 February 2026, and you rather hope that once it's had its time here, Cable Street might embark on a wider tour of the country, opening up more eyes and minds to what's really going on right now.
