10 London taxi drivers. 13 iconic green cabmen's shelters. A route of 16 miles.
On Wednesday 24 September 2025 (at 8am to be precise), the self-styled Green Hut Run Club — a group of 10 London black cab drivers — will start out from the cabmen's shelter at Warwick Avenue, embarking on a 16-mile run that passes all 13 of the remaining green taxi driver's shelters. At each of the Grade II-listed structures, they'll pause to take snaps. Given their profession, it's unlikely they'll need to ask for directions.
Between 1875 and 1914, 61 of these shelters were built, as somewhere for London's cab drivers to get a meal and (non-alcoholic) drink, safe in the knowledge that their cab (originally horse-powered) wasn't going to get pinched. The number of shelters — many still used by taxi drivers now — has dramatically diminished over the years, with the remaining 13 requiring expensive upkeep. In the case of one shelter in Cromwell Gardens, which was badly damaged by a car a few years ago, renovation can be very costly indeed. That particular shelter still hasn't reopened.
The aim of the run is to raise £100k towards the upkeep of the shelters — colourful markers of London's heritage, past and present. You can donate on this JustGiving page.
