London's Vagina Museum — billed as "the world's first bricks and mortar museum dedicated to vaginas, vulvas and the gynaecological anatomy" — is under threat.
Posts on the museum's social accounts claim that the museum — which began as a series of pop-up events in 2017 and has occupied a building in Bethnal Green since November 2023 — is just a month away from closing for good. Urgent donations are being requested, alongside pleas to share the campaign and visit the museum.
Says the museum: "The world feels like it has got worse and we cannot weather this storm alone any longer. We need your support more than ever. Without it, we will permanently close our doors, and will be forced to stop all digital activities."
What's with the sudden drive for visitors and donations? According to the museum, it's all thanks to... you guessed it... landlords. "We have a large rent payment going out at the end of March which we are expected to pay quarterly rather than monthly," explains the museum, "This will drive us below our minimum reserves limit.
"We have tried hard to negotiate an arrangement with our landlords. We want to pay our rent. They are aware of the situation. They refuse to exercise discretion."
Nearby, the Bethnal Green Working Men's Club is also fighting for its future.
You can check out the Vagina Museum on Instagram, or visit the museum itself, which is open Wednesday-Sunday and is free.
