London's Best Wine Bars: The Remedy, Fitzrovia

remedy

Continuing our tour of the capital's best wine bars.

Background
A fusion, indie wine bar. A small, former Thai restaurant in Cleveland Street has been given a Parisian wine bar style makeover with wooden floor, copper-topped bar and an outside terrace at the front. The London wine trade loves the owners’ background and their ethos, while those who aren't wine experts will enjoy the friendly, understated vibe.

Owners
With a top London wine trade pedigree, ex-Terroirs boys, American David and Italian Renato have brought the natural, biodynamic, organic and small producer philosophy to their own venture.

Top wine pick
As expected with the owners’ wine pedigree, an exciting range from approachable and affordable to serious and expensive, with 15 or so by the glass. Top picks include award-winning, Languedoc superstar Katie Jones’s Domaine Jones white and red at £6 a glass.

Food
Bar snacks include cheeses and charcuterie from £3.50, soup of the day £4.99, field mushrooms and cheese on toast £9, scallops with crispy ham £13, plus other seasonal dishes inspired by the Slow Food movement, with products supplied by artisan producers.

Who to take
Post work drink in W1. Relaxed lunch after a walk in Regents Park. Master of Wine students recovering from a session at IMW HQ round the corner. BBC and RIBA wine lovers from Portland Place offices. Students from the numerous nearby universities and colleges. Anyone who has had enough of Oxford Street shopping and needs a decent glass.

The USP
Fabulous wine list. Good range of natural wines. Relaxed atmosphere. Central location.

Any downsides?
Easy to miss if walking past — seek it out.
