We don't normally cover PR stunts but, frankly, this is Sherlock!

Fans (and those who couldn't care less) were today treated to a teaser for the upcoming series, in the shape of a hearse decorated with flowers spelling 'SHERLOCK' and the air date of the new series, 1 January 2014.

We spotted the vehicle outside St Bart's, where the detective, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, plummeted to his supposed doom at the end of series 2. It was parked in front of the phone box shrine to the detective, where fans of the series left impromptu messages to their hero following the finale of the last series.

The hearse also carries the hashtag #Sherlocklives (although the ill-placement of the sticker, partly obscured by a wing mirror, has prompted some to tweet #sherlocklive).

The first episode of the new series will be called The Empty Hearse. The title name-checks the original Conan Doyle story The Empty House, which saw the return of the great detective after his apparent death at the Reichenbach Falls.
