NELSON, NAVY, NATION: The National Maritime Museum’s latest exhibition Nelson, Navy, Nation opens today, looking at how the Royal Navy shaped everyday lives in the tumultuous 19th century. Free, just turn up

CZEGGS: These guys love a bad pun. An ‘eggshibition’ of design talent from the Czech (or Czegg) republic ‘hatches’ at Frameless Gallery in Clerkenwell today, which apparently you should definitely ‘czegg out’. Free, just turn up, until 26 October

UNIS: Inside Out Festival 2013 starts today, a week-long showcase of cultural talent from London's universities. Check the programme for dozens of free talks, workshops, performances and walks. Until 27 October

BARBICAN ADVENTURE: We think today is the best day to explore the Barbican complex with their DIY adventure trail for families. Free, pick up your trail from the Advance Box Office and allow at least one hour, 11am-6pm

SING-A-LONGA TEA: Pair your afternoon tea with a 30 minute singalong, led by musical theatre performers Claira Watson Parr and Millie Appleton. RENAISSANCE AFRICANS: Dr Miranda Kaufman and Michael Ohajuru explore the image and reality of Black Africans in Renaissance England at the National Trust's Sutton House on Homerton High Street. £3, just turn up, 6pm

ANTARCTICA: At the end of November 2011, Felicity Aston set off from the coast of Antarctica to cross the entire continent on skis by herself. Felicity talks at Ellis Brigham in Covent Garden about the mental toughness and physical challenges she endured. £8, prebook, 7pm

Good Cause of the Day

Donate your time this Christmas and volunteer over the festive period for Crisis at Christmas 2013. Giving homeless people warmth, comfort and access to vital services, Crisis Christmas centres will be set up across the capital 23-30 December and they are calling on people from all walks of life to volunteer.
