Anyone who's spent any time wandering the streets of Shoreditch is likely to have encountered John Dolan. For the past three years, the artist and his dog George have sat on the local pavements, while John sketches the surrounding buildings.

For one week only, his work will be on show at Howard Griffin Gallery...but with a twist. John's work often documents the ever-changing street art of Shoreditch, so in a reciprocal gesture of appreciation, numerous street artists have added their own marks to one of his drawings.

The lineup includes some pretty famous names. ROA, Stik, Thierry Noir, Pablo Delgado and Malarky are among the more familiar contributors, but around 40 artists are participating, from all over the world. According to the gallery:

Ostensibly a solo show for Dolan, George the Dog, John the Artist will also in effect be the biggest street art group show of recent memory, bringing a unique group of artists together to document both the constant and the ephemeral in a city that is ever changing.

George the Dog, John the Artist runs at Howard Griffin Gallery, 189-190 Shoreditch High Street, E1 6HU from 19-26 September. Entrance is free. A live painting evening featuring John Dolan, Stik and other artists on the opening night.

Actually, I have the misfortune to have a business unit near the domicile of this individual and I can assure you in no uncertain terms that he is an absolute miscreant who deserves nothing but contempt.
The reality is that without the gratuitous middle class guilt surrounding his 'discovery' nobody would give two hapeth for his average jottings. There are a great number of people who are exposed to far greater hardship and trauma during their formative years yet do not resort to anti social criminality and heroin addiction. However these people do not make for such good sideshow entertainment. Yes, I am talking about you, the voyeuristic, pseudo philanthropic, rubber-necker.
Anyway, more details about John and his life, as that's obviously why you are continuing to read:
The abuse that his dog suffers is disgusting, being constantly screamed and shouted at for the heinous crimes of standing up or basic canine behaviour. Having been a dog owner facing the same realisation of exclusive dependency, I can only assume that John is profoundly stupid as his anti social actions will definitely result in either further incarceration or at the very least an ASBO based eviction. Both of which will bring more misery to his oppressed sidekick.
The arrogance of the man is astounding, he constantly disturbs 150+ residents with his desire to (very loudly) educate the world in the works of AC/DC and Bruce Springsteen. Neither of which enjoy much popularity in the locale. In the event of anyone else playing loud music, he screams abuse out of the window and loudly phones the environmental health dept.
Just the other day he was involved in a violent fracas in our yard with the gallery owner who 'discovered' him. Where he bellowed homophobic and class based insults at the top of his voice whilst attempting to punch said owner through the (by then broken) window. I gather this came hot on the heels of him threatening the gallery staff and trashing the exhibition.
He genuinely seems to believe that he is some kind of scary celebrity, but in fact he's just an extremely anti-social idiot who should do us all a favour and get right back on the gear with a massive overdose. Like so many street inhabitants, when someone stands up to his BS he soon transforms into the cowardly misanthrope that he is.
I have observed this mans actions for 2 years and as a result I would sooner go on the street myself than ever purchase any of the scrimshaw he has created.
