Take A Walk Around The Tudor London Of Shardlake

heartstoneFans of CJ Sansom's enormously popular Shardlake books have an opportunity to lean more about the streets and buildings of the hunchbacked lawyer.

Blue Badge and City of London tour guide Paula Cooze will be leading a walk around the Fleet Street, Holborn and City areas on 29 September, pointing out some of the Tudor locations from the novels. See the site of Shardlake's house, the medieval Guildhall, locations connected with (the fictional) Guy Malton and (the historical) Richard Rich, plus the taverns favoured by Jack Barak.

Paula tells us: "I really loved the books and felt they were crying out for a walk. It took me ages to plan as I wanted to be as accurate as CJ Sansom has been in creating the real atmosphere of the medieval city."

If you've not read the books, we'd highly recommend them. Beginning with Dissolution (2003), the series charts the cases of lawyer Matthew Sharlake, who mixes both with all sectors of Tudor society — from royalty to the most impoverished — to get to the bottom of inevitably gruesome crimes.

UPDATE: Due to the popularity of this walk, a second date has been added: 17 November.

Shardlake's City, Sunday 29 September 2013 from the Royal Courts of Justice, 10.30am-12.30pm, £12. Booking is essential. Email info@crossingthecity.co.uk to reserve a place.
