Sample New Music: Nonclassical & Blank Canvas

Over the next three months we’re partnering with Sound and Music, the national agency for new music, to bring new audiences to some intriguingly creative events.

We had a terrific response to our call for volunteers to attend and give feedback on a series of new music and sound experiences. Now, here are the first two events we'll be sending them to.

Blank Canvas at Village Underground

Nonclassical at The Shacklewell Arms

UPDATE 2/9/13: the venue has changed from the Macbeth to the Shacklewell Arms.

Nonclassical is a monthly club night that puts on live, cutting edge, contemporary classical music alongside new music DJ sets in a Hoxton pub. Swapping the concert hall for the setting of a rock gig means you can experience high-quality musicianship, up close, with a pint in your hand and not worry about dressing smart or being trapped in your seat.

On Wednesday 4 September, Nonclassical returns after its summer break with Workers Union Ensemble, an exciting new music group committed to performing new works, and singer Kate Symonds-Joy, a mezzo-soprano, winner of (among many other things) Nonclassical's Battle of the Bands last year. One of the pieces she'll perform is the quite extraordinary Stripsody.

If you want to try it, tickets are £5.50 (including booking). The gig starts at 7.30pm at the Shacklewell Arms, Dalston.

Blank Canvas at Village Underground

Another concert-hall-shunning outfit, Blank Canvas specialises in fusing classical, electronic and experimental music. On Thursday 5 September, a mixed bill of "eclectic geniuses" perform in the wonderful subterranean space at Village Underground.

The headline performance is a "unique and twisted" collaboration between interactive music pioneer Tim Exile and the fearless Heritage Orchestra (about to go on tour with Joy Division Reworked). Blank Canvas founder Will Dutta performs the premiere of a new piano concerto, enhanced by sound design, and electronic music DJs Plaid complete the line up.

Blank Canvas is at Village Underground, Shoreditch on Thursday 5 September from 7.30pm. Tickets £11.

Not sure? We'll bring you reports back from each event courtesy of our new music volunteers.
