You can't browse the Londonist archive for long without encountering Iain Sinclair. The author of Hackney - That Rose Red Empire, Ghost Milk, and a dozen other important tomes has been a huge influence on anyone writing about the capital.
He's about to turn 70. To mark the occasion, he's nominated 70 favourite films to be screened in varied, almost-unusual locations over the coming 12 months. Venues include Swedenborg Hall, Wilton's Music Hall and Whitechapel Gallery, as well as several small cinemas.
As you might imagine, many of the films have London settings, such as Bronco Bullfrog (1 October), The Small World of Sammy Lee (17 October) and the 1945 adaptation of Hangover Square. The series culminates in June 2014 with a Barbican weekend devoted to films featuring Sinclair himself, including last year's Swandown.
Sinclair describes his selection as an 'anti-list' or 'anti-pantheon'. As he tells the Guardian: "These were films that struck us as having energy, attack, context – but which stood outside the usual registers of excellence, either as achieved works of art or as smartly delivered industrial product."
