London’s best theatre, opera, and theatre festivals opening this week, plus a reminder about those shows which are closing
THEATRE
Tonight is the opening night of Passion Play at the Duke of York’s Theatre, starring Zoe Wanamaker and Samantha Bond. It’s a black comedy about love and infidelity. Or, over at the tiny Jermyn Street Theatre, you can see And In The End – The Death And Life of John Lennon, which promises to be a funny and uplifting conversation with Death.
Tomorrow, The Match Box opens at the Tricycle Theatre, about one woman’s struggle with loss, forgiveness, revenge and redemption. Also opening tomorrow is Travels With My Aunt, Graham Greene’s anarchic globetrotting comedy, playing at the Menier Chocolate Factory. On Thursday, a star-studded cast brings Harold Pinter’s The Hothouse to the Trafalgar Studios under the direction of Jamie Lloyd. Simon Russell Beale, John Simm, Clive Rowe are among the names bringing this production to the West End.
Opening on Monday, Public Enemy, Ibsen’s timeless tale of corruption and courage is revived at the Young Vic.
OPERA
Berg’s intense, brutal opera Wozzeck comes to the London Coliseum from Saturday this week.
FESTIVAL
The National Theatre Connections festival comes to Greenwich from today, running until Saturday. It’s a national festival of new writing and young theatre making, and sounds very exciting. A second festival in London this week is The Freedom Plays at the Courtyard Theatre, a response to the word “Restriction” and part of the artFORMS collection, featuring one writer, three plays, three directors and 10 actors.

Thursday is your last chance to see Die Zauberflote at the Royal Opera House; Romeo And Juliet at the Unicorn Theatre; and All That Is Wrong at the Unicorn Theatre.
Saturday is the last performance of The Burial at the Albany Theatre; Before The Party at the Almeida Theatre; Ghost at the New Wimbledon Theatre; Orpheus at BAC; The Low Road at the Royal Court; Glory Dazed at the Soho Theatre; The Duke In Darkness at the Tabard Theatre; and Doktor Glas at Wyndham's.
