Earth Day Sees London Landmarks Go Dark

Once again, several London buildings will participate in Earth Day tomorrow (23 March), dimming their lights as a gesture towards a sustainable energy future. The caliginous anti-spectacle will take place at 8.30pm, centered on buildings along the South Bank. The following buildings should all fade into the night for an hour:

  • Oxo Tower's famous OXO windows will go dark, while the restaurant will drop to mostly candle lighting
  • The London Eye will dim
  • The National Theatre will switch off its fly tower lights
  • The Southbank Centre will lower external lights across its site
  • BFI IMAX will switch off the external lights of its drum-shaped building
  • Park Plaza County Hall will switch off external lights, and will use candlelight to light up the check-in desk, bar and restaurant. Earth Hour cocktails and organic food will be served. Park Plaza Westminster Bridge and Park Plaza Riverbank will also switch external lights off.
  • The Shell Centre's big tower will switch off its lights
  • ITV London Studios will be switch off all non-essential lights in their riverside tower
  • Ernst & Young at Becket House (opposite St Thomas' Hospital) will also darken

Elsewhere, Westminster Palace and Westminster Abbey will fade into the shadows, the Gherkin will engloom, Centre Point will mute and the National Gallery bedim.

The buildings join thousands of others, and millions of individuals around the world in this annual event, organised by the WWF. You're encouraged to take part and #doitinthedark. Take a look at the WWF's site, and sign up to its impressive map of participants who will extinguish all lights from 8.30-9.30pm on Saturday.
