What’s On In London Theatre 19-25 February

Here’s our pick of the best dance, theatre and opera opening in London this week.

THEATRE
From tonight, Snuff Box Theatre invites you ringside for Bitch Boxer at the Soho Theatre, an adrenaline-fuelled, no-holes-barred one-woman show documenting the blood, sweat and tears behind the London 2012 Olympic boxing team.

Over in the West End, A Chorus Line comes high kicking into the London Palladium: a group of hopeful auditionees are eager to make it into the show, including Scarlett Strallen. Tomorrow, Anders Lustgarten’s new play If You Don’t Let Us Dream, We Won’t Let You Sleep comes to the Royal Court. From Thursday, you can see the world premiere of The Tailor-Made Man at the Arts Theatre, the true story of Hollywood’s Billy Haines and Jimmy Shield’s turbulent relationship in the 1930s.

From Friday, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari opens at the Arcola Theatre; or you can see James McAvoy at the Trafalgar Studios as Macbeth, directed by Jamie Lloyd.

CHILDREN’S THEATRE
It's half-term, so there's a crop of theatre shows suitable for the small ones arriving in London this week. Choose from Sensacional at the Unicorn Theatre from tonight; Why The Lion Danced at the Polka Theatre from tonight; The Enormous Turnip at artsdepot from Thursday; or Misunderstood Monsters at the Half Moon Young People’s Theatre on Saturday.

DANCE
Two dance shows sashay into London this week: there’s Apollo / New Wheeldon / New Ratmansky at the Royal Opera House, or Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch – Vollmond (Full Moon) at Sadler’s Wells. Both open on Friday.

OPERA
On Monday, The Barber Of Seville storms into the London Coliseum in Jonathan Miller’s Tiepolo-inspired staging which mixes the traditions of Italian commedia dell’arte and Whitehall farce. (See below for a video preview.)

LAST CHANCE
Saturday is your last chance to see The Effect at the National Theatre, Di And Viv And Rose at the Hampstead Theatre and The William Stories at the Polka Theatre.

Musical LIFT takes its last trip into the lives and loves of Londoners stuck in a, you guessed it, lift on Sunday. Sunday is also the last night for Tango Fire at the Peacock Theatre, and long-runner Shrek The Musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
