RIO CARNIVAL: Brazilian bar Guanabara hosts the capital's biggest Rio style Carnival parties this weekend with a masked ball and a Sunday special in celebration. Check the link for tickets and times.

ORCHIDS: Kew's four week celebration of Orchids begins on Saturday in the Princess of Wales Conservatory. Tickets £14.50/£16 (with gift aid donation), children free. Open daily 9.30am-5.30pm.

Saturday 9 February

ARCHIVES: It’s the monthly Saturday opening of the London Metropolitan Archives so go along and see exhibition Frozen London and explore the fascinating collection while you’re there. Free, just turn up, open from 9.30am-4.45pm.

SHOP: E17 Designers will be proffering amorous handmade goods for sale upstairs at William Morris Gallery hoping you will buy your Valentine something unique and locally produced this year. Entry £2, from 10am-5pm.

SNOWDROPS: Chelsea Physic Garden opens for snowdrop spotting, wintry walks, talks and gardening advice. Entry £9/£6, under 5s free. Open from from 10am-4pm.

QUEER FILM: It's LGBT Film Day at the British Museum, showing four films throughout the day - check the website for details. Free, but booking essential. From 10.30am-6pm.

VINTAGE 1: The Vintage Fair sets up in Shoreditch Town Hall with live acts and a tea room to help you shop. Entry £2, open from 12-5pm.

VINTAGE 2: Jumble and Pearls host a Vintage and Designer Fayre at The Vibe Bar’s Pavilion presenting new up and coming London artists and designers (and the rugby will be on the big screens too). Free entry from 12-6pm.

FILM: Watch a charity screening of comedy classic "Some Like it Hot", in aid of the Samaritans. It's at Winchmore Hill's United Reformed Church Waterhouse Hall, N21. Tickets £6/£5, starts 7.30pm.

KRAFTWERK: The Underground Picturehouse at the Waterpoet pub, Spitalfields screens Minimum-Maximum, two hours of live performance recorded on Kraftwerk's 2004 tour. Tickets £4.50, prebook. Film starts at 7.30pm.

TECHNO YOUR BRAINS OUT: Zombie Soundsytem presents a huge techno party My Bloody Valentine at Fire in Vauxhall. Tickets £15+bf  from 10pm-7am.

Sunday 10 February

NEW YEAR: Celebrate the Year of the Snake around Chinatown and in Trafalgar Square. The parade starts at 10am, followed by live entertainment in the Square from noon, and fireworks at 5.55pm. Free, just turn up. from 10am.

ANTIQUES: the Antiques, Collectors, 20th Century Art Deco Fair is in the Great Hall at Alexandra Palace. See if you can spot the peregrine falcon while you're there. Tickets £6 adv or on the door, open 9.30am-4.30pm.

SWEDE: Can you create a recipe to redeem the swede from people's school dinner nightmares? Take it along to Pullens, Herne Hill Market and be judged by Jay Rayner. Free, just turn up between 10am-1pm.

V-DAY: Whether it's nipple tassels, pomade, cupcakes or curios, the Valentines Love-a-Fayre at Bethnal Green Working Men's Club will furnish you with them. £1 entry, open 12-5pm.

KNOW MORE: An all day indoor festival that aims to mix the "interesting with the interested" takes place at Drink, Shop, Do in Kings Cross with live acts, DJs, street food and free booze tastings. Tickets are £10 advance (£15 on the door), festival runs from noon-11pm.

WHITNEY: Almost a year on from her death, the 606 Gospel Group present a programme of the diva's biggest songs, over a gospel brunch at the 606 Club in Chelsea. Music charge £8, brunch extra. Food served from 12.30, concert at 1.30pm.

OTHER VOICES: The Barbican are live-streaming the closing concert of the Other Voices festival live from Derry-Londonderry. Artists include Beth Orton, Daughter, James Yorkston and Two Door Cinema Club. Takes place in the new Camera Cafe and Bar. Free, just turn up from 8pm.
