Random London Fact of the Day
Clerkenwell Fire Station is said to be the oldest working fire station in Europe, in operation since 1872 and based in a Grade II listed building on Rosebery Avenue. Here's an excellent photo-tour from Spitalfields Life (playing away from home). Alas, it's one of many stations facing possible closure in the current round of funding cuts. Good Cause of the Day
Let's stick with fire-fighting. This year's Tunnel 2 Towers charity run, in memory of those rescuers who died during the 9/11 attacks, recently opened for registration. Full details have yet to be released but, if the same as last year, it will start in Southwark Park, dip under the Thames via the Rotherhithe Tunnel and finish in the shadow of the Canary Wharf towers. 5km in total. Funds raised go to emergency service charities such as The Fire Fighters Charity. It takes place on 21 July, and there's a 10% discount on early bird sign-ups. Register here.
