Northern Line Extension Consultation Has Started

The consultation on the proposed extension of the Northern line to Nine Elms and Battersea has started.

Transport for London (TfL) says the extension, along with a regeneration of Vauxhall and Nine Elms will provide 16,000 homes and 25,000 jobs — magic words for anyone who has been following the ongoing squeeze on unemployment and housing in the capital. New stations at Battersea and Nine Elms would mean reduced journey time to the City and west end, as well as easing the strain on Vauxhall station and the existing Northern line south of Kennington. You can see the plans here. If all goes according to plan, TfL estimate the stations could be open by 2020. Councillor Lib Peck, Lambeth Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said:

"Lambeth Council fully supports the Northern line extension because it will breathe new life into the Vauxhall and Nine Elms area. It is vital that the infrastructure is put in place in Vauxhall to help Lambeth’s residents access the tremendous employment opportunities that will come from development in this area. The proposed new Nine Elms tube station in Lambeth is critical to this, as is the transformation of the gyratory at Vauxhall to make it a better place to live and work."

There have been two public consultations already on the extension —  you can view the results and TfL's comments here. Diamond Geezer visited the proposed sites recently and goes into more detail about what it means for the area.
