Free & Cheap London Events: 12-18 November

Things to do for a fiver or less this week.

Monday 12 November: It's London Jazz Festival and you'll find free jazz nightly this week in Ray's Jazz Cafe at Foyles, Charing Cross Road from 6pm (free). More tips on enjoying LJF on the cheap here.

Commonwealth Book Prize winner, Shehan Karunatilaka will be discussing and reading from his debut novel Chinaman: The Legend of Pradeep Mathew at the Royal Commonwealth Society at 6.30pm (free but please register for tickets).

Tuesday 13 November: Watch an improvised story show, followed by some improvised comedy at The Miller, London Bridge from 8-10pm (£5 in, students & NHS half price).

Wednesday 14 November: The triple bill of music at the Strongroom Sessions in Shoreditch sounds interesting: a chilean folk singer, a duo influenced by 1920s rembetika and a singer who sounds like a chocolate egg from 8pm (free).

Thursday 15 November: As it's London Jazz Festival time, there's live jazz at the late opening of the Ansel Adams exhibition at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (read our review) from 7-9pm (entry £5).

Pete Brown, author of Shakespeare's Local (read our review) talks at the Big Green Bookshop in Wood Green (free entry, contributions to refreshments appreciated).

Friday 16 November: The Southbank Centre's Christmas Market opens today so you can check out the twinkly lights after dark and enjoy an al fresco choral performance at 7pm (free).

If you love the V&A's Hollywood Costume exhibition (read our review) enjoy Music from the Movies in the cafe from 8pm (free).

Saturday 17 November: Claim free compost from Clapham Common between 11am-2pm (free!)

Art, music and other things fill Whitechapel Gallery from 1-5pm as part of a festival for young people (free).

Sunday 18 November: Beatboxers line up to impress you with their vocal skills at Boxpark, Shoreditch, between 1-4pm (free entry).

Stop Worrying, Start Living is a public talk on Modern Buddhism and Meditation at the Camden Centre, King’s Cross from 2-5.30pm (free).
