Thing To Do In London Today: 2 October 2012

A daily post, highlighting the best things to do around town today (that aren’t fully booked). We welcome additions in the comments.

Events

ART: The Turner Prize 2012 opens at Tate Britain. It'll set you back a tenner, any time between today and 6 January. All day

DOODLE ON VASES: As part of The Big Draw, the De Morgan Centre in Wandsworth is inviting visitors to draw all over the mantel pieces, vases, tiles and other surfaces (but only in the temporary exhibition room, please!), between now and 20 October. Just turn up, £4 entrance charge. All day

PHOTO: See the world's longest composite photograph, made from 81,633 snaps, at Old Spitalfields Market. It's on show from today until 14 October as part of Photomonth. Just turn up, free, all day

CANDLELIT TOUR: Sir John Soane's Museum in Holborn opens late, offering candlelit tours of the famous house of wonders. The event is always popular and you need to be in the first 200 visitors when the tickets are handed out from 5.30pm. Free, just turn up, 6pm

SCIENCE: Find out why venn diagrams are good for sexual harassment, and why penis bones mess up evolution. And that's from just one of the performers at tonight's Science Showoff event at the Wilmington Arms. Just turn up, £5 suggested donation, 7pm

Random Google Enquiry of the Day

We searched for: "London is the only capital city...."

Google answered:

  • "...in the world with a bird and wildlife centre."
  • "...overflown by every plane coming in to land."
  • "...with a doubling liver death rate."
  • "...in Europe to have a taxi fleet 100 per cent accessible to wheelchair users."
  • "...in which pupils do better than pupils living outside the capital."
  • "...where road vehicle speeds have increased."

Weather

A few mere driblets of rain mar an otherwise sunny day...much like that troublesome email at the bottom of your inbox, which intermittently worms its way into your thoughts, clouding the working week. Stop reading awkwardly written weather reports, and go deal with it. Go on. Now.

Secretly Hidden False Rumour Of The Day
An ancient bylaw outlaws the growing of turnips in the Borough of Sutton. Similarly, cospcumbers are banned to the east of the river Roding, but nobody can recall what a cospcumber is.
