What’s On In London Theatre 23-29 October

Our top tips for the best theatre, opera and dance shows opening in London this week. Plus a reminder about those leaving the capital's stages later this week.

DANCE
Two big dance shows open in London tonight. Take your pick between the Birmingham Royal Ballet at Sadler’s Wells, who are bringing modern ballets to the capital in the form of Opposites Attract, and the timely Autumn Celebration!; or Swan Lake at the Royal Opera House in a production by Anthony Dowell that draws on the opulent style of 1890s Russia. Or if you prefer your ballet lunch-break sized, check out 00 and his 7 at the Bridewell Theatre, presented each lunchtime this week by The London Ballet Company.

Finally for dance fans this week, look out for the Russell Maliphant Company – The Rodin Project at Sadler’s Wells from Monday. Maliphant’s work here is influenced by popping, breaking and contemporary dance, and features some nudity.

OPERA
This week’s opera recommendation is Götterdämmerung at the Royal Opera House – the fourth opera in the Ring cycle, sung in German with English surtitles. Read our reviews of the ring cycle so far here.

THEATRE
Tonight Pandvani 108 comes to the Soho Theatre: seven episodes of seven epics told by seven storytellers. Also opening tonight is One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest upstairs at the Gatehouse, Laura Wade's new play Other Hands at the Riverside Studios and Peter at the LOST Theatre.

Over at the Hampstead Theatre, you can see Howard Brenton’s 55 Days, a dramatic tale about the only military coup in English history. Mark Gatiss stars as Charles I, with Douglas Henshall as Oliver Cromwell. From Thursday, you can see Victor / Victoria at the Southwark Playhouse and Blue Sky at the Hampstead Theatre Downstairs.

On Friday, you can see new play The River at the Royal Court, the latest show from the team behind the big theatrical hit, Jerusalem. Starring Dominic West and Miranda Raison, The River is about a man and a woman in a remote cabin on the cliffs…

LAST CHANCE
Saturday is your last chance to see Bully Boy at the St James Theatre; the Michael Clarke Company at the Barbican; The Second Mrs Tanqueray at the Rose; Dolly Parton – 9 to 5 The Musical at the New Wimbledon Theatre; Much Ado About Nothing at the Noel Coward Theatre; The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time at the National; and Driving Miss Daisy at the Richmond Theatre.
