You can read up on the Story of Songkran Day here but water is believed to wash away bad luck. It's also a sign of respect for children to sprinkle water on their elders and a full blown water fight in a public places is not only one excellent way to cool down in the scorching sun but a refreshing way to get festive.
Here are a few ways to celebrate Songkran in London:
Get wet in St Martin's Courtyard: The Tourism Authority of Thailand transform St Martin's Courtyard, Covent Garden into a Thai corner, decorated with lanterns and water features for one day only, today, Thursday 12 April. Visit between midday and 8pm and experience traditional entertainment, food and drink and potentially get involved in a massive water fight (free entry).
Visit the Buddhapadipa Temple in Wimbledon: an authentic celebration will take place in the temple on Sunday 15 April from 9am, culminating in lunch, displays of Thai classical dance, a traditional market and the Miss Songkrat contest.
Eat Thai, watch dance: Thai Square showcases Thai dancing at 8pm on Sunday 15 April.
