Here's our selection of the tasty-sounding art, theatre, dance, classical and jazz events taking place this week
THEATRE: The award-winning theatre company Complicite return to the Barbican this week with a new play based on Bulgakov’s Master And Margarita. It opens tonight; as does Stephen Sondheim’s opera-musical Sweeney Todd at the Adelphi Theatre. You've got another chance to see the multiple Tony Award-winning musical South Pacific at the New Wimbledon Theatre from tonight. Tomorrow, After Miss Julie, a version of Strindberg’s "Miss Julie" by Patrick Marber, opens at the Young Vic. From Thursday, you can choose between Women Of Troy After Euripides at the Blue Elephant Theatre, or A Walk On Part: The Fall Of New Labour at the Soho Theatre. Also opening on Thursday is Neapolitan comedy Filumena at the Almeida Theatre. Finally, on Monday black comedy Vera Vera Vera opens at the Royal Court Theatre.
DANCE: Slim pickings this week for dance fans. We recommend the English National Ballet - Beyond Ballets Russes Programme 1 which is at the London Coliseum from Thursday.
CLASSICAL: Nicola Benedetti is one of classical music's most popular young stars. The Scottish violinist first made a name for herself when she won the BBC's Young Musician of the Year gong in 2004 (when she was just 16). Benedetti is performing a solo concert of Bach, Biber and Ysaye at LSO St Lukes, the stunning, converted church in Old Street on Thursday. A rare chance to experience a talented young artist performing without the distraction of other players.
ART / EXHIBITIONS: At Home With The World opens at the Geffrye Museum today, examining the origin of the different objects in our homes. Opening on Thursday is re:address – a fashion exhibition presented by the London College of Fashion MA Fashion Curation students. From Saturday, you can see The Body Adorned: Dressing London, the Horniman's major exhibition for 2012, looking at how the movement of people, objects and ideas have influenced London and how Londoners dress their bodies. From Monday, you can see Victoria Revealed at the newly reopened Kensington Palace; a new permanent exhibition telling the story of Queen Victoria’s life through the rooms and objects she lived in and with at the palace.
JAZZ: Monday sees the monthly return of Jazz in the Round, a cutting edge promotion at The Cockpit in Marylebone (and mentioned in our round-up of London's finest jazz venues). This edition features leading sax player Jason Yarde and progressive soul from a group called Shadow Writing.
WORLD/FOLK: If that doesn't take your fancy, a special gig at the Barbican Hall, also on Monday, might just. The barnstorming Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, who represents the post-Buena Vista Social Club generation, will be performing his new album, Yo, with support from a British vocalist, cellist and composer who is making a serious name for herself, Ayanna Witter-Johnson.
