Maps: London Theatreland, 1915

And another beautiful map to brighten up your day. This one's from 1915 — the height of the First World War, when the West End was under threat of Zeppelin bombardment. You wouldn't know it, though, judging from the gaiety of the Theatreland map, designed by MacDonald Gill (brother of the more famous Eric Gill). The chart shows London's main theatres and entertainment venues, interspersed with topical jokes and anecdotes.

The artist was also responsible for the Wonderground Map of London, which we featured earlier this year, and now adorns the Londonist wall.

Buy London Theatreland here, from Shire Publications, price £9.99.
