Club Watch: Deviation @ Concrete

Radio 1’s very own Benji B is in charge of Deviation - a club night that has seen the Don of dubstep Kode9, D&B King DJ Zinc and garage legend Wookie all play in the past. Listeners to Benji’s show will know what to expect - bass heaviness in the post-dubstep world from well respected ‘selectahs’.

Concrete is a new venue for the six-weekly event previously housed in both Grammaphone and Cable clubs. Antique tiled walls and candlelight give the impression of stepping back in time into a speakeasy, a theme that's proliferating around the capital.

This week, regular spinners Benji and Moxie played electro-tinged R&B in a relaxed back-to-back, throwing down a few hip hop tunes before increasing the tempo with UK Bass numbers. Remix maestro, Mosca headlined with his distinct future garage sound and a set featuring a majority of his own material which kept the feet firmly on the dancefloor. Benji closed the night with a mixture of heavy funk and jazz such as this Nina Simone song, increasing the speakeasy vibe.

Deviation is next at Concrete on 14 December. The line up has yet to be announced but expect a continuation of the high calibre seen to date. Entry £7, 9pm-2am.
