Congratulations to AFC Wimbledon who this afternoon secured promotion to the Football League following victory over Luton. The south London side won the the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off after a 4-3 triumph on penalties.
The small club was only formed in 2002. Previous local side Wimbledon FC upped and left for Milton Keynes, where they transmuted into MK Dons. Disappointed fans decided to set up a new team, holding auditions for players on Wimbledon Common. Like any good Womble, they made good use of the things that they found, and have since won five promotions in eight seasons, including a stretch of 78 games undefeated.
The side will now play in League Two, just one promotion away from regular encounters with their displaced predecessors.
