Ramsay To Open Southwark Restaurant

Rumours have been circulating for a while now that Gordon Ramsay is looking to open a new restaurant in Southwark. Admittedly, the rumours have been less fierce than those about the chef himself.

The rumours are true. About the restaurant, at least. Union Street Cafe is set to be the first south of the river venture for the super-chef, who himself lives in Wandsworth.

After excellent local site London SE1 gave us our first clue, it’s now confirmed that the Union Street Cafe will sit on the corner of Great Suffolk Street and Union Street, taking up two floors of the Harling House complex not far from Southwark Tube station.

The launch of this latest addition to Ramsay’s empire will be overseen by Stuart Gillies, who recently presided over the relaunch of The Savoy Grill.  A launch date of February next year has been mooted but is unconfirmed. The announcement of this new ‘informal eatery’ comes following bad times for Ramsay’s other informal eateries - his pubs.

It’s unsurprising but depressing to see that the restaurant is already being described as being at Borough Market. It’s only half a mile away, but using this approach Bank station, Guy’s Hospital and Tate Modern would all be considered part of the market too. Now that would confuse the tourists.
