Preview: London Open Bike Polo Tournament

bikepolo2010.jpg

The London Open Bike Polo tournament takes place on 21st- 22nd of August in Newington Gardens, Southwark.

An Olympic sport in 1908 (Ireland beat Germany for the gold) bike polo has had international ups and downs (2 world wars didn't do it any favours) and these days it's known more for its novel urban matches on Brick Lane than as a mainstream team sport. Organised by the London Hardcourt Bike Polo Association (founded in 2009), this end of summer tournament will bring around 60 international teams to compete, settle old scores and become London Open 2010 champions.

There will be big prizes on offer from 14 Bike Co, so we anticipate some fiercely fought games. The tussle begins at 9am on Saturday 21st August till 9pm, followed by a polo party. Hangover coffees and "experimental polo" will occupy Sunday, unless enough teams show up for a 2 day tournament. If you've an idea what experimental polo looks like, please divulge or hazard a guess in the comments.

Entrance is free, cheers and heckles are encouraged and there is a Barclays Cycle Hire stand nearby on Harper Road.
