William Lilly was the 17th century, Strand-dwelling, astrologer who was supposed to have predicted the Great Fire of London, and was later tried on suspicion of starting it (he was acquitted). At the height of his fame in 1652 he was faced with a solar eclipse and two lunar eclipses; Dr Roy Booth of Royal Holloway College is at Treadwell's Bookshop in Covent Garden tonight at 7.30pm (£7) talking about what Lilly did, the day of the solar eclipse itself, and the consequences during this strange time in the country's history (Cromwell and the Rump Parliament and all that).
