A few weeks after it was originally planned, Boris Johnson has finally got his way: "Democracy Village", the Parliament Square peace camp inhabited by a troupe of ragged-trousered activists and their entourage, was cleared overnight by bailiffs. Around 60 heavies, backed up by police officers, moved in around 1am to move people on, most of whom went readily enough. A handful of the most intransigent chained themselves to scaffolding and trees, but even those spirited idealists were resigned to their fate: "We want to be here 'til rush hour", said one, shortly before being removed some time before bleary-eyed commuters caught sight of him. The square has been fenced off so that Westminster council can clean it up, before it is re-opened to the public. (Photo / Sinister Pictures)
