UKCMRI: Medical Research Centre Plans Revealed In Detail

If you head down Midland Road, between St Pancras and the British Library, you'll come across a sizeable patch of empty ground on the fringes of Somers Town. Well, here's what's going to fill it.

The UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation (or UKCMRI - an abbreviation that even those affected by the project sometimes fail to remember) will be one of Europe's largest institutions for medical research, bringing together geneticists, molecular biologists, cell biologists and many other flavours of scientist into one happy barn of investigation. It will also serve as the main UK coordination centre in the event of a major flu epidemic.

The Guardian have a fly-through video of the proposed structure, which looks like the offspring of an airport terminal and (from above) a chromosome.

Construction starts next year for completion in 2015.
