Campaigners against a third runway at Heathrow emerged victorious this morning at the High Court, when Lord Justice Carnwath ruled that the Government's decision to approve the project was "untenable". A coaltion of local authorities, Greenpeace, and the Campaign to Protect Rural England, have long argued against the plan, and immediately cited the ruling as a knock-out blow; Hayes & Harlington MP won't have done himself any favours with the Parliamentary Labour Party by crowing that "the game is up for a third runway". The DfT says it will fight on regardless, but the government will now have to re-state their case for the runway and go through public consultations again; the Tories, meanwhile, have given mixed messages on their support.
