Music Preview: Paintings Of Ships

paintingsofships.jpg New music to try this week: the bound-to-be-beautiful performance by local indie band Painting of Ships, playing at The Dublin Castle on Tuesday at 8pm. We discovered them at a quaint little house party where Christmas lights were strung and meringues were made and instantaneously became smitten with the group. Embodying raw talent sans pretension they write what might be some of the sweetest and wittiest lyrics you've heard in a while. Reminiscent of the Moldy Peaches (think Juno) others have compared their sound to Sonic Youth and Nirvana and they've been branded "nautically-charged shoegaze" but we like their own tag, "In the deep end, trying not to seem so shallow."
