Electric Car Trial Jump Started

The eco car industry received a boost yesterday as a £25m plan to trial electric cars in cities across the UK was announced.

340 cars will be available in eight cities with different brands assigned to each area and ranging from electric Minis to vans. London's trial car is the smart ed, which we checked out a couple of weeks ago. Fancy getting behind the wheel to take part in this long-term trial? If you've got a garage and modern wiring in your house you could be in with a chance. Testers will have their eco-runaround for 6-12 months while data on all aspects of electric car ownership is gathered.

Back in April, Boris Johnson promised to make London the electric car capital of Europe with 100,000 of them humming around the streets by 2015 with electric buses to boot in a bid to cut carbon emissions by 60% before 2025. Proposed subsidies of up to £5000 will also put some power behind the move to green motoring.

In support of the trials, motoring journalist and ex-Top Gear presenter Quentin Wilson said

There will be a move towards making these cars as appealing and as powerful as petrol consuming vehicles makes the next few decades a very interesting time for the environmentally conscious UK car driver.
