Pull The Plug On Petrol

Boris Johnson’s promise to make London electric could come true if new plans go ahead to offer subsidies to motorists in return for scrapping their cars.

The roar and fume of London’s notorious traffic could be reduced to a mild hum by the electric revolution and the good news is that you won’t need to stock up on 50p pieces first. We’re wondering if forgetting to pay your bill will lead to being cut off or having your car impounded.

Will central London become a plug-in haven for motorists running low on juice? The scheme should see a £20m investment in infrastructure to support the cars, so the image in our heads of extension leads trailing around Trafalgar Square won’t quite make reality.

Geoff Hoon, the ironically-named transport secretary said the move could slash the UK’s carbon emissions, though we wonder if the scrappage plans are good for the environment or the motor industry.

We’re hoping to get our hands on one of the trial cars which might find their way to city centres.
