Battersea Dogs & Cats Home homed 20% more dogs last year than in 2007 and the numbers of strays being found on the streets is increasing. It's probably a lot to do with people looking to cut down on "optional" costs as the recession hits, but that's no excuse for turning a pet onto the streets. Taking it into an animal shelter gives it a chance to be looked after by someone else; left to fend for itself, it could well die. And to guard against Rover or Felix getting rehomed by mistake, get them microchipped - it only costs about £15-20. (Image / ucumari)
