From tomorrow, watch out for brand new poster art works, inspired by the ubiquitous tube roundel, which is celebrating its 100th birthday, on a platform near you. The posters are teasers to tempt you to an exhibition of 100 new roundel artworks at the Rochelle School in Shoreditch, where we told you to go and see the Le Gun thing, between 8-30 October.......

67. Subterranean Dwellers As a child I was always peeping from the stairs at the latest horror movie my mum and dad had hired. One such shocker was the 1972 Brit-flick 'Deathline', also known as 'Raw Meat', which concerned the horrific rumour that a race of cannibals were existing under the streets of London, and their acts of carnage taken out on all manner of victims such as tramps, drunks, city workers and pets.......

Of the industrial variety that is. The District and Bakerloo lines may be a teensy bit affected today by two different disputes involving RMT members and something about sacked colleagues. Yawn. Meanwhile, on the buses, Unite says that its members are to strike on the 29th August and again on 12th September for 24 and 48 hours respectively. They claim that operators have different rates of pay and that bus drivers should be paid equally.......

Maintenance workers for Tube Lines are planning a series of strikes for higher wages. The maintenance workers are concerned by the 4.95% pay rise they were offered over the next two years, given that those employed by Metronet are getting a better deal. Two 72-hour strikes are planned to start on the 20th (next Wednesday) and 3 September, both at noon. Expect complications on the Northern, Jubilee, and Piccadilly lines. Meanwhile, the Tube cleaners network-wide......

64. The Beast Beneath. Of all the things I have written about with regards to weird phenomena in London, what you are about to read is possibly one of the strangest and most significant tales ever. This story comes via two good friends and fellow researchers – Jonathan Downes and Nick Redfern. Nick, a Texas-based investigator heard from Jonathan Downes, who runs The Centre For Fortean Zoology, that during the 1940s at the Royal......

62. The Scariest Urban Legend Urban legends are often considered myths, or 'friend of a friend' tales (FOAFtales), which differ from classic mysteries in the sense that they are perceived as exaggerated yarns. London has many such tales from its dark, foggy corners, but there is one such story which has become criminally forgotten, and for me remains one of the capital's most horrifying legends – namely 'The Maniac On The Platform' first discussed......

Aside from the memories of umpteen Ashes losses, the turf at Lord's Cricket ground rests above a series of disused railway tunnels. While we'd love to see them opened up for nighttime jaunts, smarter heads have proposed they be turned into a subterranean hospital. The £100m care centre would be attached to nearby Wellington Hospital, and include a suite of operating theatres and intensive care units. We'll leave the question of recuperating from serious injury......

This weekend column is brought to you by the founders of Niceties Tokens, Liz and Pete of Team Nice. 47. Last Orders As soon as Boris announced the ban of drinking on public transport, it felt like everyone had the same idea of a drinking party on the tube. The more organised of us set up Facebook events, and the most popular of these parties self-propelled their numbers into the thousands, till everyone knew......

Have you heard? Boris is banning booze on all London transport come the first of June! Do you care? Many of your fellow Londoners do! And they’re planning parties to prove it. Grassroots campaigns both to bid adieu to booze cruising on the Tube and to openly flout the new ban are sprouting up all over – where else? – Facebook. Garnering the most attention is James Darling’s Last Orders on the Underground. The......

New hope for paranoid Londoners has come in the form of virtual reality tube ride developed by King's College London, which has sims-like passengers who breathe, look around and even gaze right at the user. It lacks the bodily smells, litter and bumps you'd normally experience on a journey, but it's probably best not to add any additional annoyances to those already feeling anxious and paranoid. The VR train experience is helping psychologists get better......

As far as fare cards go, the tap-in-tap-out system of Oyster is pretty simple and, barring someone nicking it on its way back to your pocket, pretty secure. But that latter thought might be disproven as a pair of German researchers are now claiming they've hacked the Oyster system. Karsten Nohl and Heinryk Platz say they sorted out how to clone the Dutch manufactured chips used in Oyster and similar cards internationally in December.......

View Larger Map Cold War bunkers, abandoned Tube stations, buried rivers, deep level shelters...London's concealed features are among its most intriguing. So, in age-old Londonist tradition, we've created a map to try and show what a hollow city this is. And we need your help. We've plotted the more obvious features - the Fleet River, Zone 1 ghost stations, the Kingsway telephone exchange, etc. But we know there's a lot more down there. Please use......

Crossrail, the Channel Tunnel rail link, basement developments – underground London is growing as fast as the surface city. The past, present and future of our subterranean spaces are celebrated in the latest exhibition at New London Architecture. To be honest, you can enjoy most of the show from the comfort of your laptop by downloading the guide. However, if you're in the Tottenham Court Road area, it's worth popping in to see the......

A series celebrating the talent of our friends over in the Londonist Flickr pool who make our site look pretty with their fabulous photographs. Here, they introduce themselves and share their favourite London shots. I was on Oxford Street, when I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. I'd originally gone to do some shopping, but ended up spending the better part of an afternoon taking photos of Londoners next to an abandoned......

He attacked someone at Waterloo Underground station taking pictures. The photographer in question, though, was quick thinking and snappy and took this very clear mugshot of his assailant. British Transport Police are now seeking to find and question him. PC Ben Dawson said: It would appear the victim, an amateur photographer, who enjoys taking snaps of London street scenes, was taking shots on the escalators when a member of the public took exception to......

London Underground have banned love from the tracks: pictures of a naked Venus have been deemed too offensive. Gah! Prudes and philistines all. Holy Cow! The Hindu community is less than impressed. Of course it is pure coincidence that London council tax rises are minimal in election year. Bow’s inflatable sculptor is up in the docks for manslaughter. Antlers and swords - you heard it here first. Londonist is just so avant garde. Eau......

After masquerading as functional, rational, squared-off and decidedly masculine entity for over a century, the London Underground has this week come out as a woman. A new, sweeping, curvaceous tube map has come to light: it rather resembles a multi-coloured Medusa, or perhaps a mad conductor…but be careful what you see in it as the creator, Max Roberts, is in fact a psychologist. The original map by Harry Beck is of course a work......

28. Urban Legends Of The Underbelly! Urban legends are often vague, friend-of-a-friend tales (FOAFtales) similar to ‘Chinese whispers’, in that they are distorted, exaggerated and through generations of storytelling, they become myth, embedded in our society. For the last fifty or more years there has been a sinister legend pertaining to the London Underground that a mysterious, possibly caped figure, lurks in the cold tunnels, and is known for the ghastly act of pushing......

27. More Terrors Of The Tube! To continue from our last stop of ghosts pertaining to the London Underground, the spectral girl of Elephant & Castle appears to be a rail relation to the phantom hitchhiker legend, in that several witnesses have described, often whilst sitting in an empty carriage, encountering a young woman who takes a seat but often vanishes between stops. Just like many phantom hitchhiker myths, this particular spook story is......
