This Week In London’s History Monday – 4th February 1915: Norman Wisdom is born in Marylebone. He would become a very successful entertainer, as well as (bizarrely) a cult film icon in Albania. Tuesday – 5th February 1924: The Greenwich Time Signal pips are broadcast on BBC Radio for the first time. (Lots more geeky detail on this is available in our post from this time last year.) Wednesday – 6th February 1875: The......

Hello Jeff! But don't bother opening your mouth to reply, because I haven't got the time to listen; I'm too busy celebrating! No no, don't worry, you haven't missed St. Satan's Day. I'm celebrating because it's been a year since I started doing stand-up! You'll have to forgive me, as this may be quite a self-indulgent post. But I can scarcely believe I've managed to persevere for this long! You see, I'm a notoriously......

Once it became evident that someone the chap in the street had actually heard of was willing to go forward, the Conservatives closed nominations for their 2008 London mayoral candidate last Monday. Former Met Commissioner John Stevens, rubber-lipped former Defence Sec Michael Portillo, ex-PM 'Sir' John Major, sacked BBC D-G Greg Dyke and, erm, Nick Ferrari had all resisted the overtures of David Cameron for some reason best known to themselves and their future......

There are a million things to do in London this week, but if you fancy a night in, here are a few things to keep you occupied. On TV, Londonist likes: Monday, 9 July Britain’s Next Top Model (Living, 21:00-22:00) After the dramatic first episode that saw all the girls get in a screaming match on their first night in their posh London house, we can't wait to see what the wannabe models will......

If you thought that by going to a Picturehouse Cinema you were somehow patronising an independent, alternative, eco-friendly, huggy-buggy enterprise that stuck it to the man then think again. Staff at the Ritzy in Brixton, are going to be striking this Saturday over a proposal to increase their minimum wage salaries from £5.35. to £5.41. The Picturehouse's owners, City Screen, it would appear, are "the man". When Londonist went down to see what was......

The fight for London Mayor is seriously beginning to kick off. Our Ken, Greg Dyke, John Major, that the guy from the Big Issue - all have been fingered for the job. Now the latest candidate being touted is none other than Brian Paddick. Paddick is the Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. In Lambeth he famously focused his efforts on class A drug dealers and took a 'relaxed' approach to cannabis use.......

The Londonist lab is still waiting on the results so we're still not sure whether you have to be a moron to buy a 4x4 in the first place or if there's something in the upholstery that impedes oxygen to the brain thereby slowly turning you into a prick. Or prickess in this case: A heavily pregnant woman was pinned against a post by a 4x4 and racially abused in a road rage incident,......

Guardian writer Julian Glover thinks he knows just the man for the Tory Mayoral candidacy: The applicant must have proven executive experience at high levels in government or business and clear and longstanding links with London. Ok... An interest in sport (especially the Olympics) will be taken into consideration as will international experience. Must be used to dealing with a hostile media, good at talking to people in the street and on television. A......

Humphrey, we hardly knew you: The 10 Downing Street cat Humphrey has died, a spokesman for the prime minister has confirmed. The black and white feline passed away at the home of a Cabinet Office worker who took him when he "retired". Humphrey was adopted by Number 10 after wandering into the building as a stray while Margaret Thatcher was PM in 1989. Surviving the Thatcher years only to be ousted by the pussy......

Something we should have mentioned at the start of this week is the release of Patrick Keiller's film London on DVD. The film is a "a provocative film essay in the form of a journal, recording fictitious journeys through a very real city," and is available as of this week in a double-disc digipack along with Keiller's equally cultish sequel Robinson in Space. Shot in 1992 London documents the capital during the period in......
