That burly fella on the tube looking a bit shifty? The diminutive woman with a suspiciously large rucksack giving you the heeby jeebies? Got a funny feeling about that couple walking along Oxford Street? The Met want you to report it. A new campaign is being launched to encourage Londoners to "trust their instincts" and contact the Anti-Terrorist Hotline if they see anything untoward. Adverts on the tube and on radio will exhort people......

Today marks 20 years since a dropped match started a blaze at King’s Cross tube station that killed 31 people. Smoking on the sub-surface portions of the Underground had been banned two years before the 1987 fire, but at the time smokers were still allowed to light up on their way out of the station. It’s thought that a smoker’s match fell beneath the wooden escalator and ignited the mixture of grease and rubbish......

Anyone looking at this case for the first time would be dumbfounded. Were the Metropolitan Police Force in breach of health and safety laws when they shot an innocent man seven times in the head? Health and safety laws? Isn't that like prosecuting Genghis Khan for illegal immigration? Terminology aside, the Met were yesterday found guilty of endangering the public when, on 22 July 2005, they misidentified Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes as a......

What we now know about the killing of Jean Charles de Menezes- * The stories that Jean Charles acted suspiciously by running away from the police and jumping the barriers at Stockwell tube are untrue. * He was not wearing a bulky jacket or a bomb belt with visible wires hanging out. * Members of the police force knew this (for instance, the ones that followed and shot him.) * Senior officers knew that......

The fight for London Mayor is seriously beginning to kick off. Our Ken, Greg Dyke, John Major, that the guy from the Big Issue - all have been fingered for the job. Now the latest candidate being touted is none other than Brian Paddick. Paddick is the Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. In Lambeth he famously focused his efforts on class A drug dealers and took a 'relaxed' approach to cannabis use.......

Well this was kind of inevitable: A drama about a Brazilian man killed by police in London is being filmed... Mango Films will focus on events before the death of Jean Charles de Menezes - mistaken for a suicide bomber - and the impact on London's Brazilian community. Hmmm. For every great movie like United 93 there seems to be a complete mess like World Trade Center so it's a worry as to how......

This is a tricky one. Do we really need a permanent SAS unit on standby 24/7 in London? Well, we've got one: The basing of a unit from the elite special forces regiment “in the metropolitan area” is intended to provide the police with a combat-proven ability to deal with armed terrorists in the capital. The small unit also includes surveillance specialists and bomb-disposal experts. Although the Metropolitan Police has its own substantial firearms......

The trial of the Metropolitan Police, over health and safety allegations relating to the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, will not be heard until October next year. Sir Robert McAlpine has been chosen to build the £280 million Olympic stadium. We assume he'll have a bit of help (boom boom). A new report claims that London will face an ‘increased risk’ from radioactive waste if a new generation of nuclear power plants are......

In case you missed it earlier: The Met have pleaded not guilty to health and safety charges relating to the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes. It's a 'test case' apparently. Police patrols at churches and mosques in London have been stepped up following the protests over Pope Benedict's remarks about Islam. A survivor of July 7 has criticised TerrorBull Games of Cambridge for creating War on Terror: The Board Game. The game includes......

The case against the Metropolitan Police over the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes reopens in court today. The first hearing, which was scheduled for last month, had to be adjourned until today after the Met's lawyers requested extra time to consider their plea. Incredible really when you consider that they're being prosecuted under health and safety laws (as a result of the Crown Prosecution Service deciding that there was no evidence to charge......

It was revealed yesterday that the senior officer in charge on the day Jean Charles de Menezes was shot dead is to be promoted. Commander Cressida Dick (no...too easy) is currently in control of the gun cruime unit Operation Trident, and was in charge of the 'tactical delivery' of the Menezes operation the day he was shot for getting on a Tube train. With the promotion she will become a deputy assistant commissioner. The......

The family of Jean Charles de Menezes are to challenge a request by prosecutors to postpone the inquest into his death. Bits of Auckland, Cape Town, London, Mumbai, New York and Singapore are going to be projected onto the National Theatre's flytower. Cool. From the end of this year, cleanliness ratings for thousands of cafés, restaurants etc will be psoted online. We bet some of the posh London eateries are crapping it. Our sister......

The BBC is reporting that no individual police officers will be charged over the death of Jean Charles de Menezes. "Instead," says the Beeb, quoting a 'source close to the investigation', "the Metropolitan Police is to be prosecuted under health and safety laws over the fatal shooting." Asad Rehman, of the Justice4Jean campaign group, who was with the family when they received the news, said earlier: "They will be very, very disappointed if no officers......

First it looked like it was going to be a farce, then we had a report that maybe charges would be brought against the police for the murder of Jean Charles de Menezes. The Guardian now reckons that we're back to health and safety violations: the CPS is expected to announce on Monday that the Metropolitan police as an organisation will be charged with breaching health and safety at work laws over the shooting,......

Justice at last then as it looks like the Met will, after all, be prosecuted for the fatal shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell. Prosecuted, that is, under health and safety laws: it looks increasingly likely that if charges are brought they will be under the Health and Safety Act 1974, accusing the Met of failing in its duty of care to protect Mr Menezes. If found guilty the Met would face......

Relatives of Jean Charles de Menezes joined with protestors in voicing their criticism over the handling of the recent terror raid in East London: Mr Menezes' cousins Alex Pereira and Patricia Armani wore Brazilian football shirts with Menezes and the number 27 on the back. It may seem like a distant memory for many Londoners but for those directly affected, the events of the 7 July bombings are still as fresh as ever. For this reason, the publication of two major official inquiries into the bombings could prove just a little disappointing as reports have suggested they will be incomplete, due to sensitivity and legal constrains. A report by the Commons Intelligence and Security Committee will investigate whether there was......

Tube union leaders have pledged to resist proposals to issue ID cards to London Underground engineers and maintenance staff. Their resistance will take the form of strike action of course. Nature, red in tooth and claw. So there was some sort of nature programme that everyone and their spirit guide has been going on about (Planet Earth, Sun 9pm BBC1), which even we thought we’d better watch, although nature programmes have never been high on our list of ‘favourite genres’ (distinct lack of gun fights, murder mysteries – the lion did it! – and space battles). Our verdict? Well, it was a pleasant enough......

After the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes was reopened yesterday, his family have asked that a High Court judge investigate the shooting. While the inquest into the death Jean Charles de Menezes is due to resume today a full inquest hearing cannot be held until the IPCC decide whether or not to charge any of the Met officers so the hearing is likely to be "a brief, administrative affair."
