Late-night lash lovers in Clerkenwell will have one less option for the next month at least: Dust nightclub has had its license revoked after a shooting last weekend. Gunshots were heard in the vicinity of the Farringdon Road nightspot early Saturday morning, and a 28-year old man was later taken by a friend to a south London hospital suffering from bullet wounds to his legs. Following police advice, the club's license was suspended on Monday......

Foreign visitors may be bemused by our relatively toothless bobbies with their funny hats and ineffectual truncheons, but the truth is they can't always be trusted when packing heat. A female officer has been removed from operational duty after she left her firearm in an Edgware Road Starbucks. With a bladder perhaps filled with one of the chain's venti soy frappucinos, the officer, who has not been identified but whose surname is suspected to......

Last night was another in a series of fatal instances of being in the wrong place at the wrong time as London struggles with its youth crime. 18-year old Ryan Bravo was shopping in Costcutter with two family members last night when several men on mopeds opened fire from the street outside. Bravo entered the store on Camberwell Road in Walworth at the same time as three other men ran in, laughing and talking......

On the same day that a gunman was shot dead in the King's Road, the story of Magda Pniewska's senseless death in a skirmish between armed teenagers last October was relayed by prosecutors at the Old Bailey. Ms. Pniewska was caught in a "Wild West"-style shootout, the jury heard yesterday. Upon finishing her shift at Manley Court nursing home in New Cross, the 26 year old care worker walked home. She was mere yards......

Last night's shoot out in Markham Square, near the Kings Road, ended with the police taking out the gunman. The BBC reports the 32 year old gunman (or gun maniac if you're reading the Sun) firing at police between 17.00 and 21.30 with the police returning fire on each occasion. Once the gunman was pronounced dead, the incident was reported to the Independent Police Complaints Commission for investigation at 21.50. There's no news on what......

King's Road in Chelsea is closed due to an incident involving gunfire: members of the public reported hearing gun shots in the area and police were fired at when they approached. The armed police officers discharged their weapons in return at approximately 5pm and the incident is still unfolding. No injuries have been reported, no arrests have been made yet but King's Road is closed and shops in the immediate area are closed. Business owners......

Guns don't kill people, bullets kill people. But bullets need guns to fire them and people to pull the triggers, so it's a bit of a joint effort all round. The technicalities of death aside, one thing we can probably all agree on, and speak up now if you don't, is that we don't need guns on the streets. Of any kind. We'd rather not even have them in the hands of the police......

The Met is expanding its use of Tasers, now permitting non-firearms officers to carry the stun guns. Today is the first day in a trial of increased Taser use; the Met is looking to use them as an alternative in violent situations where guns are not needed. Tasers work by sending a charge of 50,000 volts through the body of the person they are used on (imagine a static electricity shock that could temporarily......

The police want us to know that they’re doing what they can about guns. The Olympic Delivery Authority want us to know that they are being careful with the Iron Age and Roman relics that they are digging up on site. The Olympics people also want us to know that they are sustainable. We are glad to know that 'Russians in London' news stories aren't just about money laundering and assassins. People like us......

Today, they came from the stars, i saw them are recording an XFM session and on 9 November, will be transmitting a BBC 6music Marc Riley session. We suggest you tune in. There are a *lot* of bands and artists in London, so many that it's easy to never discover the really great ones. Bandwatch is a new feature on Londonist where we talk to a new band or artist we think are really exciting. Of course it's our personal opinion and you might think our choices suck, but Bandwatch relies as much on you filling us in on the amazing band you discovered last week,......

This Week In London’s History Monday – 3rd September 1878: Passenger steamer Princess Alice collides with cargo ship Bywell Castle on the Thames near Woolwich Pier. All of the 700 passengers of the Princess Alice are either thrown into the heavily polluted river or trapped below the decks of the sinking vessel. Fewer than 100 passengers survive. The Proms are a marvellous institution. Remarkably diverse musically, accessible, world class and - crucially - cheap as chips, they are the soundtrack to summer in London and we are privileged to have them on our doorstep. It was with an eager step that we hied ourselves to the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday afternoon for the sold-out 48th Prom, despite the glowering sky and hint of rain in the air. Arriving at around......

The world can be a pretty scary place these days. There are a million things to worry about, from global warming to gang members with guns. We thought that going down to the local supermarket would be pretty safe, though. It's just buying food – how dangerous can it be? If you were in the South Norwood Somerfield last week, you'd have found that shopping isn't as safe as it seems. The danger didn't......

Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on. In Gothamist's neck of the woods, they found out that many things are possible: A man caught a 40+ pound fish off the Rockaways and took it home on the subway. Graffiti......

As the morning of the 2007 Champions League final dawns and Liverpool fans throng the streets of Athens, desperate to acquire a seat for tonight's match from amongst tens of thousands of corporate matchgoers, it seems an appropriate moment for the launch of our new series of articles looking at where football is going, particularly regarding off-the-field issues which seem increasingly to dominate newspaper back pages. Liverpool's opponents tonight, Milan, are especially apposite for......

No, this is not a Touch Up London entry involving a giant root vegetable or a cross-looking Stefan Edberg (whimper). The magnificent Swede in question is the rather stunning Götheborg, a full-scale replica of an 18th century merchant trading ship that this weekend popped to visit the capital and have a bit of a face-off with a modern-day warship. It's not entirely an accurate replica - the deck is 10cm higher as seamen are......

See comments for major corrections to this post. Another Banksy bites the dust. Some nobber at TfL decided to paint over the famous Pulp Fiction image in which Jackson and Travolta clutch bananas in place of guns. The work near Old Street tube had been around for years. Local barber George Thompson told the BBC, "People used to come from all over to see it and photograph it. There is no way it could......

In a piece of late Friday afternoon no-newsness yesterday the BBC reported the terrifying findings of a Defra security inspection of London Zoo: "Tigers and lions kept at the zoo could leap over the 6ft-high perimeter fence if they escaped from their enclosures." Argh! Forget the BoB. This is where this shit gets real. Lions and tigers (and bears)… loose in Regents Park…. Oh my! Of course, the ‘could’ and the ‘if’ and the......

A teenager who shot dead a young father outside his east London home told a jury he was sorry for his family and that he had only meant to scare him. Bradley Tucker, 18, told the Old Bailey jury he believed the gun he fired at Peter Woodhams would only "go bang". In what is certainly a tragic situation, perhaps we can find a silver lining: a lesson in firearm awareness. Guns don’t just......

This Is Local London has an interview up with a former gang member about the use of knives in London. It makes for an informative if disturbing read: Knives are normal. They are just like having a mobile phone - everybody has got one... if you get robbed, a knife is handy. If you have got a knife you feel that you have a chance of saving yourself from being attacked. But when you......

Leonardo DiCaprio was yesterday nominated for an Oscar for his role as Danny Archer in Blood Diamond, while his co-star, Djimon Hounsou, is up for a Best Supporting Oscar. The film directed by Edward Zwick (The Last Samurai, The Siege) is first and foremost an action movie although it does do a good job of highlighting the misery caused by the illegal trade of conflict diamonds in Africa. But is it any good? Well......

Bit of an odd one this. The BBC are reporting that Scotland Yard's specialist firearms unit are to offer people a chance to see for themselves how difficult their jobs can be. Public relations meets Quake then? People will test how they would respond in a typical firearms scenario by using laser guns in a video simulation. The test is part of the training plan for specialist CO19 firearms teams. Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghafur......

You can't beat a good design classic. If you're a British 'ard man that means a sawn-off. And the good news is that according to the Guardian they'll only set you back between £50 and £200. That's cheaper than the Wii. Other buying options include: A purpose-built 9mm handgun, which is easier to conceal than a shotgun, is available for £1,000-£1,400 on the back streets of Britain while those wanting "a gangster image" can......
