Dial Arch

Dial Arch

This pub was editorially chosen for inclusion by Londonist.

This almost-riverside pub has one of the grandest entrances of any London drinking den. An old munitions building, the brick warehouse is fronted by two girthsome pillars, each supporting a pyramid of cannonballs, and a magnificent sundial, hence the pub name. Arsenal football club was founded just yards away, as a somewhat understated sculpture attests. When the nearby Crossrail station opens in 2018, this place is going to be heaving.

The pub is grand on the inside, too. A large drinking area with leather sofas stretches out to the left, while a series of more intimate spaces can be found to the right. The bar stands proudly at centre, bathed in light from a modern glass ceiling. This is a Young's pub, and the usual selection of ales from that brewery are present and correct. But the pub also supports local brewer Hop Stuff, with a couple of cask options (we much preferred the Mosaic over the Fusilier). Plenty of local bottles and cans can also be procured.

Lest we forget this is a former industrial building, we spotted a little mouse running about between sofas. All very cute, but let's hope they don't get into the kitchen.

On Facebook. On Twitter as @DialArch. Quiz night is Sunday.

The football memorial to Arsenal.
Wait, that's not Young's beer...
If you order a shandy-top, you get sucked into one of those pipes.
