Whitechapel Added To Night Overground

The Overground's late night service is a year old this weekend. TfL has a special treat up its sleeve to coincide with the anniversary — a bonus station has been added to the nocturnal network.

From Saturday early morning (15 December 2019), Night Overground services will stop additionally at Whitechapel. The new halt will be a boon to many — not just those partying in the area, but anybody working a late shift nearby (the Royal London Hospital springs to mind).

TfL reports that some 250,000 journeys have been made in the first year of the Night Overground. This is the section that runs from Highbury and Islington to New Cross Gate. The figure supposedly matches expectations.

For those who've not had the pleasure, the Night Overground operates in the early hours of Saturday and Sundays from 00:25 to 06:45, when it officially becomes your common-or-garden day-time Overground.

Whitechapel had previously been excluded from operations thanks to ongoing Crossrail works. Although that line is now delayed to who-knows-when, works are sufficiently advanced to allow the Overground station to operate in the wee small hours at weekends.
